Hungarian Geological and Geophysical Institute building

Topped with blue tiles to represent the Tethys Ocean, with figures of Atlas on the rooftop holding up globes, this building by Ödön Lechner is one of the most spectacular by the ‘Hungarian Gaudí’. The Hungarian Geological and Geophysical Institute ) [map] (Magyar Földtani és Geofizikai Intézet; www.mfgi.hu; open weekdays and visits by appointment only) opened in 1899 and combines Hungarian folk art with geological elements. It exemplifies Lechner’s distinct Hungarian Art Nouveau style, particularly with the use of weather-resistant glazed Zsolnay tiles. The institute is home to an impressive collection of minerals that can be visited, along with the spectacular interior of the institute, for free (by appointment).
